Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton, bekannt durch seine Werke „Zanoni“, „Das kommende Geschlecht“ und „Die letzten Tage von Pompeji“ folgt im „Lebenselixier“ (1862 unter dem Titel „ A strange Story“ erschienen) den Lehrsätzen des altehrwürdigen, geheimnisvollen Ordens der Rosenkreuzer. Dem Orden, dem wahrscheinlich auch Bulwer-Lytton angehörte, wird nachgesagt, dass seine Mitglieder durch „vollendete Lebenskunst“ und ein ganz aussergewöhnliches Maß an Wissen aus der Naturwissenschaft und Philosophie ein Mittel gefunden haben wollen, das menschliche Leben vor Krankheit, Alterung und Tod zu schützen und dass sie - durch ihre Kunst - so lange zu leben vermochten, wie das Leben ihnen Genuss und Freude bot, kurz - das Lebenselixier gefunden zu haben. In diesem Roman, der im frühen 19. Jahrhundert spielt, trifft ein Arzt auf Margrave, einen undurchsichtigen Schüler des Okkulten. Dieser wirft seinen Schatten über die gesamte Handlung, auch über Fenwicks Liebe zu Lilian Ashleigh, einer jungen Dame der Gesellschaft, hinter deren Hang zum Mystischen sich eine ausserordentliche Fähigkeit verbirgt. Bulwer- Lytton sagte dazu: „Es ist ein Roman und ist es nicht; es ist eine Wahrheit für die, die es verstehen können und eine Phantasterei für die, die es nicht können“. Treffender kann man „Das Lebenselixier“ nicht charakterisieren.

Die Erzählung erschien in der deutschen Übersetzung erstmals im Jahr 1919 in der Rudolph'schen Verlagsanstalt in Dresden. Sindbad, mit richtigem Namen Friedrich Schwickert (1857-1930), war ein astrologischer Forscher und Schriftsteller, der viele Jahre im Dienste der Marine als Fregattenkapitän tätig war und schon in jungen Jahren Reisen nach Asien und Indien unternahm. Seine hier abgedruckte und vielbeachte Einweihungsschrift "Das Lebenselixier in Bulwers Romanen und in den Schriften wahrer Adepten" erschien 1923 im Verlag von Max Altmann in Leipzig.
Generationen von Lesern und Filmzuschauern haben sich von der faszinierenden Vorstellung jener furchtbaren Naturkatastrophe fesseln lassen, von der Vorstellung, daß durch den Ausbruch des Vesuvs menschliches Leben und Treiben in einem Augenblick erstarb und manche Schreckensmomente in Lava und Asche bis in die Gegenwart konserviert und sichtbar blieben.
