Fast zerbricht die Liebe des glücklichen Paares jedoch, als die unschuldige Hero von Neidern am Hof der Untreue bezichtigt wird. Den Hauptreiz gewinnt das Stück vor allem durch das zweite Paar: Der Soldat Benedick, ein eingefleischter Frauenverächter, und Beatrice, scharfzüngige Männerhasserin, liefern sich bissige Wortgefechte von sprühendem Sprachwitz. Schließlich werden sie, ebenfalls durch eine Intrige, von der angeblich unsterblichen Zuneigung des jeweils anderen überzeugt – und gestehen sich prompt ihre wahren Gefühle für den nur scheinbar verhaßten anderen ein. Das oft gespielte Stück feierte vor einigen Jahren auch auf der Kinoleinwand große Erfolge: in der Verfilmung von Kenneth Branagh glänzen er selbst und Partnerin Emma Thompson als das haßliebende Paar.
