Der im 19. Jahrhundert von der Wissenschaft geprägte Begriff „Indonesien“ („Indische Inseln“) greift weit über das aus der holländischen Kolonie Niederländisch-Indien hervorgegangene politische Gebilde hinaus und umfasst u. a. auch die südostasiatischen Inselkulturen der Philippinen, Malaysias, Taiwans und sogar Madagaskars, welche vor Jahrtausenden vor allem durch bäuerliche und seefahrende Einwanderer mongolider Herkunft und austronesischer Sprachen, die in Wellen vom asiatischen Festland einsickerten, ihre gemeinsame Prägung erhielten. Diese Spuren sind trotz aller späteren Einflüsse aus China, Indien, dem islamischen Raum und Europa bis heute in der materiellen und geistigen Kultur der indonesischen Altvölker sowie der hochzivilisierten Reiche Javas und Sumatras nachweisbar. In keinem Land der Welt lässt sich diese Vielschichtigkeit derart deutlich aus der Tradition der Stoffe und Tücher ablesen wie in Indonesien. Die Sonderausstellung „Zur Freude der Götter und Menschen – Textilien aus der Inselwelt Indonesien“ aus dem Nachlass von Franz Lakner zeigt die drei wichtigsten Bereiche der Färbe- und Webkunst: Ikat, die sogenannten „Schiffstücher“ und Batik.
