Das Buch erzählt, wie eine kleine Gruppe armer Ritter 1119 in Jerusalem einen radikalen Plan fasste: Pilger beschützen, notfalls mit Gewalt. Daraus wurde innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte eine militärische Elite mit Einfluss von Schottland bis Zypern. Die Templer kampften an vorderster Front im Heiligen Land, verloren aber auch bittere Schlachten gegen die Mamluken. Gleichzeitig bauten sie in Europa ein Finanznetzwerk auf, das seinesgleichen suchte: Kredite, Geldtransfers, Schatzverwaltung, selbst Könige liehen sich Geld von den Templern. Doch der Erfolg wurde ihnen zum Verhängnis. Als das Heilige Land verloren ging und die politischen Gegner in Europa stärker wurden, kam der Fall. Frankreichs König Philipp IV. ließ 1307 den ganzen Orden verhaften, wegen angeblicher Ketzerei. Der Papst machte mit. 1312 war der Orden Geschichte, ihr letzter Großmeister verbrannte auf dem Scheiterhaufen. Dan Jones gelingt mit diesem Buch etwas, was viele historische Sachbücher nicht schaffen: Er beschreibt eine Zeit voller Spannung. Man kommt sich manchmal vor, als würde man einen Thriller oder dergleichen lesen. Ich konnte das Buch teilweise nur schlecht zur Seite legen. Das spricht ganz klar für Dan Jones, der hier keine starre Abhandlung präsentiert. Man lernt etwas. Man versteht Zusammenhänge. Wer auch nur ansatzweise etwas mit Geschichte anfangen kann, sollte definitiv diesem Buch eine Chance geben.
