The greatest brazilian mistery is inside this book. Talked about 'til this day in schools and SAT tests (in Brasil called ''Vestibular/Enem''), even though it was written 126 years ago. I like how Machado de Assis portrays the brazilian elite so cynically it's almost funny. I really liked how he described the characters and how their appearances can be deceiving if you don't, in a way, judge them. The use of religious morality is also very ingrained and used as a critique to the ''bourgeois style of life'' in 1899. One of those ''must reads'' of brazilian literature.
