Sixteen years before Bruce Jansen became president, a PR stunt united five diverse individuals: fourteen-year-old Dorothy "Doggie" Rogers, sheriff T. Perkins, single mother Rosalie Lee, journalist John Bugatti, and Wesley Barefoot, the son of Jansen's employee. Despite their differences, they form a bond through their shared experiences and support for Jansen. For Doggie, working alongside Wesley on the campaign trail makes Jansen's victory personal, offering her a job in the White House and validation against her Republican father's views. However, their triumph is shattered when Jansen's pregnant wife is assassinated on election night, and Doggie's father is implicated as the mastermind. As Jansen takes office, he transforms into a man determined to eradicate gun violence at any cost. This leads to the erosion of rights, international travel restrictions, and rampant civil unrest as militias rise against the government. The media faces censorship, and chaos ensues. Each of Jansen's former allies finds themselves in a struggle for survival, rights, and the future of their country, while Doggie fights to prove her father's innocence amidst the turmoil.
