At the end of the journey, Sam Clemens and his crew, including the giant Joe Miller, embark on the iron riverboat Not for Hire to reach the river's headwaters, where humanity has been resurrected. After 33 years on the river, they face their final challenge: the evil king John Lackland, who waits upriver on the Rex Grandissimus, the first riverboat Sam built and which John hijacked. Their conflict is complicated by the presence of agents from the Ethicals, advanced beings who created Riverworld for unknown reasons, and the involvement of the Mysterious Stranger, a rebel Ethical enlisting humans for a cause that may lead to salvation. The impending battle occurs along the shores inhabited by the Church of the 2nd Chance, a group pursuing ethical perfection to advance to the next phase of existence. Though non-violent, their leader, La Viro, may attempt to sink the ships to prevent conflict. Among the 2nd Chancers is former Nazi officer Hermann Goring, who previously encountered Sir Richard Burton. Burton and others, contacted by the Mysterious Stranger, are reluctantly aboard John’s boat to reach the headwaters. Will any of X's humans survive the battle, and how can they confront the Ethicals, who possess the power to reshape planets and resurrect humanity?
