The book by the English author consists of two parts - The Jungle Book (1894) and The Second Jungle Book (1895) - which narrate a series of adventures of an Indian boy raised by wild animals in the jungle. As he matures, he returns to human society, which he subconsciously longs for. Life in the wild, governed by the natural laws of necessity, allows the author to reflect on human society, where the balance between good and necessary evil is disrupted. It is essentially a prose epic featuring animal characters, primarily set in the Indian jungle. The first book contains seven stories, while the second contains eight, each introduced by a short poem and followed by additional poetic texts that complement the narratives. More than half of these tales (three in the first and five in the second part) focus on the young boy Mowgli, who was abducted by a man-eating tiger and saved by a wolf pack. In this world, animals communicate with each other, while humans remain oblivious to their language. Mowgli learns the language of the animals and becomes an integral part of the jungle and a member of the wolf pack.

A legendary tale of a young boy raised by wolves, this adventurous story has captivated generations. Lost in the jungle, the boy is pursued by the fearsome, crippled tiger Shere Khan. He seeks refuge in a wolf den, where the wolves protect him and the she-wolf adopts him alongside her cubs. Due to his smooth, hairless skin, he is given the name Mowgli, meaning "frog." To be accepted into the wolf pack, two other animals must vouch for him: the wise old bear Baloo, who teaches the jungle's laws, and the black panther Bagheera. They become Mowgli's greatest protectors. Growing up among the pack, Mowgli becomes agile and strong, able to speak the language of animals. His adoptive wolf parents hope he will one day take revenge on Shere Khan. Mowgli is the central character in more than half of the stories in the two-part collection by Rudyard Kipling, originally published in 1894 and 1895. The tales of Mowgli have also been published separately, appealing to readers of all ages.

  • The story of Mowgli, the abandoned “man-cub” who is brought up by wolves in the jungles of Central India, is one of the greatest literary myths ever created. As he embarks on a series of thrilling escapades, Mowgli encounters such unforgettable creatures as the bear Baloo, the graceful black panther Bagheera and Shere Khan, the tiger with the blazing eyes. Other animal stories in The Jungle Books range from the dramatic battle between good and evil in “Rikki-tikki-tav” to the macabre comedy, “The Undertakers.” With The Jungle Books, Rudyard Kipling drew on ancient beast fables, Buddhist philosophy, and memories of his Anglo-Indian childhood to create a rich, symbolic portrait of man and nature, and an eternal classic of childhood. This edition contains both of Kipling’s Jungle Books, as well as “In the Rukh,” the story that introduced readers to Mowgli. Part of Penguin’s beautiful Hardcover Classics series, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith, these delectable and collectible editions are bound in high-quality, tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design
