C.J. Sansom, der traurigerweise letztes Jahr nach langer schwerer Krankheit verstorben ist, hat mit der "Shardlake"-Serie eine historisch-juristische Meisterleistung geschaffen. Die Annahme, dass ihm dies auch mit seinem politisch-geschichtlichen Roman "Feindesland" gelungen ist, kann leider nicht behauptet werden. Der Plot ist die entsetzliche Annahme, dass Deutschland den 2. WK gewonnen und sich mit Großbritannien verbündet hat. Die zeitgeschichtlichen Abläufe und Personen, wie der britische Nazi Mosley, der in dieser Konstellation britischer Innenminister ist, die Gruppe der Revolutionäre um Churchill, sind, hätte dieses schreckliche geschichtliche Szenario stattgefunden, realistisch gezeichnet. Die vom Autor erfundenen Hauptfiguren der Geschichte, niedrige Beamte des britischen Unrechtsregimes, die widerständig aktiv werden, die genretypischen Randfiguren um sie herum, sind schablonenhaft, ihre Handlunge, ganzes Wesen erwartbar. Die gesamte Geschichte, die sich hauptsächlich um ein Geheimnis, welches ein verwirrter Physiker hüten muss, ist schwach, der Ablauf einer Entführung kindisch als Idee und auch genau so gezeichnet, nicht wirklich nachvollziehbar. Sansom bezieht sich in seinem Epilog auf den Roman "Vaterland" von Robert Harris, und als Kenner dieses grandiosen Werkes weiß man von Anfang an, wer der Ideengeber für den Nachfolger war, diese more or less- Kopie reicht allerdings nicht an das Original heran.
